I Think Everyone’s Crazy Except Me And Thee…
… and sometimes I wonder about thee.
John Cole has had an epiphany.
If the right-wing meltdown continues any faster, I predict that by the end of the week, prominent right-wing bloggers will be standing in public, unshowered, singing re-written verses of Queen’s “We Are the Champions†with silly insults (Glenn has the cooties, Glenn has the cooties) wearing only Hello Kitty diapers, an American Flag, and an Islamofascism Awareness Week sticker all the while balancing orange traffic cones on their heads.
He tagged the post under “General Stupidity” which has the earmarkings of a well know Montana blogger who forgets that we don’t yet have a Gibberish/English – English/Gibberish dictionary that we can rely upon to figure out the secret code of when calling someone an asshole isn’t an ad hominem fallacy. But I digress. Cole’s real epiphany came yesterday:
I had intended to register independent, but when I got there to do it, I had a moment of clarity- there seemed to be no point leaving the Republican party in protest and joining the unwashed masses. If I really was going to protest, it made no sense to not commit to the opposition party. Besides, as a Republican all these years, I never had any problem voting for libertarians, Democrats, etc., I don’t see why being a Democrat will change anything. And, the 2008 election really is the most important election of my lifetime- the basic foundation of our country has been under assault for a while, now, and I want to vote in the Democratic primary as a Democrat, not as someone with no party affiliation. I want to send a message, and as small as this gesture (which should appropriately be interpreted as a middle finger to the GOP and not as a sloppy wet kiss to Nancy Pelosi) is, I want it to mean as much as possible. There is now one less Republican in WV, and one more Democrat.
Long story short, I got up there to register as an independent, said “Fuck it,†and now I am a Democrat. I certainly don’t agree with all their positions, but they are not bat-shit crazy like the GOP. That has to count for something. Additionally, I no longer have to read posts by the 24% crowd calling me a “true conservative†with quotes o’sarcasm (you know who they are). Not any more, bitches. I repudiate you, your party, and whatever the fuck it is you are currently pretending is “conservatism.†It isn’t.
Well, as a guy who quite sending money to any GOP organization some years ago I can sympathize – sort of. But for Cole I really think that “don’t let the door hit you on the ass”is a better departing note.
Defining “conservatism” comes with risks and it often is presented, like pornography, as “I can’t define it but I know it when I see it.” But Cole has been the darling righty that the lefties embrace as a “reasonable” conservative. That’s telling in and of itself.
I’m not thinking about attempting to define Cole’s conservatism nor do I give a damn about it. But Cole has been this darling long enough to see that he’s assumed the position of the fat girl that tags along with the cheerleader set in high schools – they like her around so no one can accuse them of being snobs. Pat Buchanan has the same station on Chris Mathew’s Hard Ball. I’ve seen this happen in the Montana blogosphere from time to time. After all, almost everyone wants to be liked. A few years ago, when there were just a few of us tilting to the right is was easy for people to assume the “Hey!, I’m really just a mealy-mouthed conservative that agrees with you on many things.” posture. Now that the right has a much stronger voice I think the urge to be liked has a solid offset – although the consequences are likely to be a higher level of stridency by the right.
I’m sure, however, that most Democrats will embrace Cole’s conversion but noting this:
I certainly don’t agree with all their positions, but they are not bat-shit crazy like the GOP.
I think that “bat-shit crazy” is in league definitionally with both porn and conservatism. So, once again John, don’t let the door hit you on the ass.

If it’s a Hillary year, as it appears to be, then he’s probalby made a lateral move.
Maybe not. I was just poking around the issues, and find her pleasingly liberal in many areas.
Muslims Against Sharia congratulate David Horowitz FREEDOM CENTER and Mike Adams, Tammy Bruce, Phyllis Chesler, Ann Coulter, Nonie Darwish, Greg Davis, Stephen Gale, David Horowitz, Joe Kaufman, Michael Ledeen, Michael Medved, Alan Nathan, Cyrus Nowrasteh, Daphne Patai, Daniel Pipes, Dennis Prager, Luana Saghieh, Rick Santorum, Jonathan Schanzer, Christina Sommers, Robert Spencer, Brian Sussman, Ed Turzanski, Ibn Warraq and other speakers on the success of the Islamofascism Awareness Week.
Islamofascism (or Islamism) is the main threat facing modern civilization and ignorance about this threat is astounding. We hope that this event becomes regular and reaches every campus.
A great many Westerners do not see the clear distinction between Islam and Islamism (Islamofascism). They need to understand that the difference between Islam and Islamism (Islamofascism) is the same as the difference between Christianity and Christian Identity Movement (White Supremacy Movement).

This gets my vote for best line of the week (if not of the year):
